Elgin Juneteenth Organization is a registered nonprofit organization based in Elgin, Texas. We are dedicated to educating the community about the historical significance of Juneteenth while promoting unity, cultural awareness, and support for future generations.

Mission Statement

The Mission of the Elgin Juneteenth Organization is to educate people of all races about the significance of unity and understanding in the community. As a community we celebrate the 1st Independence Day and by the signing of the “Emancipation Proclamation” by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862; Hence, we celebrate “America’s 2nd “Independence Day”, Juneteenth!

Vision

We strive to maintain unity within the community by supporting future generations of African American youth while honoring and preserving the history of June 19th (Juneteenth) in Bastrop County.

Current Goal

Promote awareness of African American history and cultural contributions
Provide college scholarships for local youth
Supply school materials to families in the community
Promote relations between the community and city officials
Celebrate and preserve Juneteenth traditions

History

The Texas Juneteenth holiday was officially recognized in 1977 by the Texas Legislature, sponsored by Representative Al Edwards. The Elgin Juneteenth Organization was established in 1999 under the leadership of Mayor Eric Carlson. The initiative was spearheaded by council members Mertis Thomas and Gladys Ward, who now serve as emeritus members. The organization’s first president was Byron Mitchell.
